When a transversal crosses two parallel lines, exactly 8 angles are created and they collapse into 4 equivalence classes: corresponding angles (equal), alternate interior angles (equal, "Z-pattern"), alternate exterior angles (equal, outside the parallels), and co-interior / same-side interior angles (sum to 180°, "C-pattern"). The Basic Proportionality Theorem (BPT, also called Thales' theorem) extends this to triangles: a line parallel to one side cuts the other two proportionally.
